Takes the stress out of decorating your home! Working with Liv on the design of our home has been an absolute pleasure from start to finish. Liv designed our entire house remotely, and what impressed me most was her ability to understand exactly what we were trying to achieve. Despite never being in the house in person, she quickly grasped our style, how we wanted the spaces to function, and most importantly, how we wanted our home to feel. She brought ideas and expertise that elevated the design far beyond what we could have achieved ourselves. Communication throughout the project was excellent. Liv was always responsive, organised and clear, making what could have felt like an overwhelming process both enjoyable and straightforward. We always felt informed, involved and supported in the decisions we were making. One of Liv’s greatest strengths is her ability to create a cohesive vision across an entire home. Each room has its own character, but everything works beautifully together and feels connected. The finished result feels thoughtful, balanced and completely in keeping with the way we live as a family. What I particularly appreciated was how collaborative the process felt. Liv was incredibly open to feedback and genuinely listened to our thoughts and ideas. She never made us feel like we had to choose between her vision and our own preferences; instead, she worked with us to refine and evolve the designs until we reached a result that we absolutely loved. The end result is a home that feels both beautiful and completely “us”. We are genuinely delighted with every room and couldn’t be happier with how everything has come together. I would wholeheartedly recommend Liv to anyone looking for a talented, creative and highly professional designer. She has been phenomenal to work with, and we’re incredibly grateful for everything she has done to help turn our house into a home we love!

Luisa was amazing to work with! She nailed our nursery brief and turned it around in record time. Every inch of space has been used so cleverly, with brilliant storage solutions that actually make life easier. The style is exactly what we wanted—timeless but still fun and playful. We love it.

Very happy returning customer! We have used My Bespoke Room for at least eight designs and, every time, the service has been tremendous - from the designers through to the customer success and shopping teams. They really make the whole experience feel personal. Jelena was incredible. We gave her two very different rooms and design directions, and she absolutely nailed both of them down to the last detail. The packages MBR offer make what feels like a luxury design experience completely affordable and so, so worthwhile.

Can AI Really Replace an Interior Designer? Here’s What We Think

Let’s be honest. AI is pretty amazing, isn’t it?

You can upload a picture of your living room, ask ChatGPT or Google Gemini to give it a makeover, and seconds later you’re looking at a styled space with furniture, lovely colours and not a stray toy or dog hair in sight.

What’s not to love? For anyone who’s ever stared at a blank wall wondering what on earth to do with it, AI can be a brilliant place to start.

At My Bespoke Room, we’re certainly not against it. In fact, we’re big fans of using technology to make interior design easier, faster and more accessible.

But there’s a rather big difference between generating a beautiful picture of a room and creating a beautiful room you can actually live in.

That gorgeous sofa AI has suggested? Can you actually buy it? Will it fit through your front door? And, perhaps most importantly, will it survive your children, your dog and your other half’s habit of eating spaghetti on the sofa?

These are the sorts of things that make a real difference when you’re designing a home.

So, can AI really replace an interior designer? Let’s explore what it does brilliantly, where it still needs a helping hand, and why we believe the magic happens when technology and real human expertise work together.

AI vs a real designer: Everything at a glance

Benefits of AIWhere a designer excels
Brilliant for instant inspirationKnows what works in real life
Free style experimentationUnderstands how you live and takes the stress of overwhelm away
Overcomes the designer blockOvercomes contrasting tastes
Handpicks a realistic shopping list that works for your style and budget
Knows how to design a room that has cohesion to the rest of your home

How AI can help you design your room

First, let’s give AI the credit it deserves, because there are some things it does incredibly well.

1. It’s brilliant for instant inspiration

We’ve all been there. You know your room needs something, but you can’t quite put your finger on what.

Perhaps the living room feels a little uninspiring, your bedroom needs a refresh, or you’ve moved into a new home and have absolutely no idea where to start.

AI can be fantastic for getting those creative juices flowing.

Upload a photograph, describe what you’re hoping to achieve, and suddenly you’ve got ideas for colours, layouts, furniture and finishing touches that you might never have considered.

It can help you imagine possibilities rather than staring at the same four walls wondering what to do next.

And sometimes, that’s exactly the nudge you need to take action.

2. You can experiment with different styles without spending a penny

Always wondered what your living room would look like with a little more colour? Or whether you’re actually a minimalist at heart rather than the maximalist your Pinterest boards suggest?

AI lets you play around with different looks in seconds.

You could try a contemporary interior, explore the glamour of Art Deco, experiment with mid-century modern, or see whether a cosy Scandinavian-inspired scheme might suit you.

And if you’re not quite sure what your style actually is, take our 2 minute interior style quiz and we’ll show you.

The wonderful thing is that you can try something completely different without committing to a single paintbrush stroke.

Fancy a bright pink living room? Go for it.

Changed your mind ten seconds later? No problem!

3. It can help you overcome that dreaded decorating block

Sometimes the hardest part of decorating is simply getting started.

You might have a vague idea of how you want your home to feel, but struggle to translate that into actual colours, furniture and layouts.

AI can help you explore those early ideas and give you a useful starting point.

It can even suggest furniture styles, possible layouts and places to look for products.

But, and this is quite an important but, inspiration is only the beginning.

Because once you’ve found a look you love, you need to work out how to make it happen in your actual home.

And that’s where things get a little more complicated.

Where AI still struggles to design your room

Let’s imagine you’ve asked AI to redesign your living room.

It comes back with a gorgeous image. The sofa looks nice, the lighting is fancy, the room looks twice the size, and everything coordinates effortlessly.

You’re sold.

But then you start looking a little closer.

1. That beautiful room might not work in real life

AI-generated interiors can look incredibly convincing. But they’re a little too good to be true.

That beautiful sofa might not exist in a shop. The coffee table might be far too large for your actual room. And that fabulous floor-to-ceiling window and moved power points? Well, unless you’re planning some fairly major building work, that’s not going to happen.

Even when AI is given room measurements and photographs, its suggestions still need to be checked against the practical details of the space.

Radiators, sockets, doors, awkward corners, ceiling heights and natural light all play a part in creating a room that genuinely works.

And when it comes to structural changes, you need appropriately qualified professionals to establish what’s safe and possible.

An experienced interior designer brings all these practical considerations into the conversation.

Because there’s no point falling in love with a room that only exists on your screen.

2. AI doesn’t really know how you live

This is a big one.

A room can look absolutely beautiful in a photograph and still be completely wrong for the people living in it.

Perhaps you’ve got three children, a dog who loves muddy walks and a partner who insists on eating dinner in front of the television.

That pristine cream sofa and delicate glass coffee table might look wonderful in an AI-generated image, but are they really going to work for your family?

And then there are all the little things that make a house a home.

The armchair you’ve inherited from your grandmother. The artwork you bought on your honeymoon. The rather enormous television your other half refuses to part with.

These aren’t necessarily things you want to remove just because they don’t fit a particular aesthetic.

A great interior designer doesn’t simply create a beautiful room. They create a beautiful room that works for you, your lifestyle and the things you love.

Meet our team

That’s why our designers spend time getting to know their customers.

They ask questions, listen carefully and understand what matters before recommending a design.

Sometimes it’s the little things people mention in conversation that turn out to be the most important.

3. It can’t always help when two people have completely different tastes

Now, this is something we see ALL the time at My Bespoke Room.

One person dreams of a calm, neutral, minimalist home.

The other wants colour, pattern, personality and perhaps a rather fabulous statement sofa.

Or one partner wants a beautifully styled living room with artwork above the fireplace, while the other is determined to have the largest television known to mankind.

Sound familiar?

We’ve designed over 10,000 rooms, and we reckon our designers have probably saved a few relationships along the way!

The challenge isn’t simply finding a design that looks good. It’s finding something that makes both people feel heard and happy.

Our designers often act as a neutral third party, helping couples understand each other’s priorities, find compromises and bring two different styles together.

Perhaps that’s a neutral foundation with colourful artwork and accessories. Or clever storage and a beautifully integrated television that keeps everyone happy.

AI can certainly suggest ways to combine different styles, but a real designer can have those conversations, pick up on people’s reactions and help guide them towards decisions they both feel confident about.

And sometimes, having someone independent say, “Actually, I think we can make both of those ideas work,” makes all the difference.

4. A beautiful image isn’t the same as a realistic shopping list

Here’s another question worth asking when AI creates your dream room.

Where do you actually buy everything?

AI can recommend products and suggest retailers, but its generated images don’t always feature real, purchasable furniture.

And even when the products are real, they might be outside your budget, unavailable or completely the wrong size.

At My Bespoke Room, our designers help bridge that gap between inspiration and reality.

They consider your budget, source real furniture and furnishings, and help you understand where it’s worth investing and where you can save.

Because spending £2,000 on a sofa that doesn’t fit isn’t anyone’s idea of a successful room makeover.

And you don’t necessarily need to replace everything, either.

Sometimes it’s about making better use of the furniture you already have, introducing a few carefully chosen pieces or changing the layout to make the whole room feel different.

A real designer can help you make those decisions with confidence.

5. Your home is more than one beautiful room

AI is fantastic at creating individual room concepts.

But when you’re decorating several rooms, there’s another challenge: making your home feel connected.

You probably don’t want to walk from a serene Scandinavian living room into an ultra-glamorous Art Deco hallway and then a completely unrelated country-style kitchen.

Well, unless that’s exactly your thing!

There’s an art to creating a home that flows naturally from one room to another, while still allowing each space to have its own personality.

An experienced designer considers the bigger picture, from colours and materials to lighting, furniture and the way different spaces work together.

The aim isn’t to make every room look identical.

It’s to create a home that feels thoughtfully put together rather than like a collection of unrelated Pinterest boards.

AI and human interior designers: Better together?

We certainly think so.

At My Bespoke Room, we’ve always believed that great interior design should be accessible to everyone.

That’s why we’ve embraced smart technology alongside the expertise of our professional designers. It helps us work more efficiently and deliver a more affordable, straightforward service without losing the human element that makes good design so valuable.

And AI is another exciting tool in that process.

It can help generate ideas, explore different styles and open up possibilities you might never have considered.

But it’s the designer who helps turn those possibilities into something real.

Someone who listens to your ideas, understands your budget, considers the furniture you already own and helps you make decisions that work for your life.

Someone you can ask questions, bounce ideas off and turn to when you’re completely stuck between two paint colours.

Or when your partner insists that the enormous leather armchair is staying, no matter what.

And sometimes, what you really need isn’t another 20 design ideas.

It’s someone who can help you decide which one is right for you.

That’s the difference.

So, can AI replace an interior designer?

Our answer? Certainly not.

AI is an incredibly useful tool for inspiration, experimentation and exploring what’s possible.

And as the technology develops, it’ll undoubtedly become even more helpful.

But great interior design is about more than generating beautiful images.

It’s about understanding people, solving problems, working with real budgets and helping someone create a home that feels like them.

At My Bespoke Room, that’s what our experienced designers do every day.

And the good news is that having your very own interior designer is probably a lot more affordable than you think.

With fixed-price design packages starting from just £175 per room, you can get professional help with anything from those tricky decorating decisions to a complete room transformation.

We’ve spent over ten years making interior design easier, more affordable and more accessible, and have now designed over 10,000 rooms. If you want to get inspired visit our projects page to check our hundreds of real design projects.

So, by all means, have fun with AI. Experiment with colours, save those gorgeous images and dream big.

FAQ:

Can ChatGPT design a room?

Yes, AI like ChatGPT and Google Gemini can help to design your room. They provide an instant snapshot of what could be possible; however, you’ll need the help of a designer to bring these ideas to life.

Is Gemini or ChatGPT better for designing rooms?

Neither Google Gemini or ChatGPT is overtly better or worse at interior design, as they both have different strengths. Gemini uses Neo Banana for superior image suggestions, whereas ChatGPT is better for the text-based organisational aspects, such as simplifying ideas or creating a shopping list.

How much does AI interior design cost?

Nothing, it’s free. You can use AI tools like ChatGPT and Google Gemini to design rooms from your smartphone, acting as a blueprint or a starting point before getting more serious about your room and your home. You will have only so many credits until you start paying for a subscription.
