Takes the stress out of decorating your home! Working with Liv on the design of our home has been an absolute pleasure from start to finish. Liv designed our entire house remotely, and what impressed me most was her ability to understand exactly what we were trying to achieve. Despite never being in the house in person, she quickly grasped our style, how we wanted the spaces to function, and most importantly, how we wanted our home to feel. She brought ideas and expertise that elevated the design far beyond what we could have achieved ourselves. Communication throughout the project was excellent. Liv was always responsive, organised and clear, making what could have felt like an overwhelming process both enjoyable and straightforward. We always felt informed, involved and supported in the decisions we were making. One of Liv’s greatest strengths is her ability to create a cohesive vision across an entire home. Each room has its own character, but everything works beautifully together and feels connected. The finished result feels thoughtful, balanced and completely in keeping with the way we live as a family. What I particularly appreciated was how collaborative the process felt. Liv was incredibly open to feedback and genuinely listened to our thoughts and ideas. She never made us feel like we had to choose between her vision and our own preferences; instead, she worked with us to refine and evolve the designs until we reached a result that we absolutely loved. The end result is a home that feels both beautiful and completely “us”. We are genuinely delighted with every room and couldn’t be happier with how everything has come together. I would wholeheartedly recommend Liv to anyone looking for a talented, creative and highly professional designer. She has been phenomenal to work with, and we’re incredibly grateful for everything she has done to help turn our house into a home we love!

Very happy returning customer! We have used My Bespoke Room for at least eight designs and, every time, the service has been tremendous - from the designers through to the customer success and shopping teams. They really make the whole experience feel personal. Jelena was incredible. We gave her two very different rooms and design directions, and she absolutely nailed both of them down to the last detail. The packages MBR offer make what feels like a luxury design experience completely affordable and so, so worthwhile.

Interior Design Inspiration » How To Guides » How to Decorate a Nursery on a Budget

Designing a nursery is one of the most exciting milestones of parenthood, but it’s no secret that the costs can add up quickly. From the crib to the rocking chair, prepping for a new arrival can feel like an investment of a lifetime.

Fortunately, creating a safe and nurturing space for your baby doesn’t require a luxury budget. With a little strategic planning, smart upcycling, and some clever design tricks, you can design a dream room that feels high-end without the premium price tag.

Key Budget Nursery Tips

  • Prioritise longevity: Choose convertible furniture like cot-to-toddler beds and standard chests of drawers.
  • Keep walls adaptable: Use paint tricks or removable decals rather than expensive, permanent wallpaper.
  • Shop your home: Look for existing shelves, mirrors, or chairs in other rooms that can be cleaned up and moved into the nursery.
  • Focus on lighting: A warm, inexpensive nightlight or a soft paper lampshade creates a cosy ambience without breaking the bank.

1. Start with a Versatile, Gender-Neutral Base

When you’re designing on a budget, always think in the long term. Choosing a flexible foundation means you won’t have to redecorate in two years when your baby enters the toddler phase, or if you decide to welcome another little one down the line.

Instead of opting for traditional baby pinks or pastel blues, look toward a timeless palette. Incorporating earthy tones, warm greys, soft creams, or muted sages creates a serene environment that grows with your child.

By keeping the walls and large furniture pieces neutral, you create a blank canvas that cushions, blankets and wall art can fill later on.

2. Invest in Convertible Furniture

The golden rule of budget decoration is to buy once and buy well. Look for pieces that serve more than one purpose or can adapt as your baby grows.

The Cot Bed Conversion

Instead of buying a standard crib that your baby will outgrow in less than two years, invest in a convertible cot bed. These clever designs feature removable sides and adjustable mattress heights, which transform into a toddler bed that lasts until they are around four or five years old.

The Upcycled Changing Station

Traditional changing tables can be expensive, and they have a very short lifespan. Once your baby is out of diapers, it quickly goes to waste.

Instead, buy a standard, sturdy chest of drawers. You can securely attach a removable changing mat to the top to create a DIY changing station. The drawers leave space for nappies, wipes, and sleepsuits right now, and when your child is potty trained, you simply remove the mat. You’re left with a beautiful piece of bedroom furniture that lasts into their teenage years.

Tips on easy ways to decorate nursery walls

3. High-Impact, Low-Cost Wall Decor

You don’t need expensive designer wallpaper to decorate a wall. There are plenty of budget-friendly ways to bring a pop of joy and colour into the space for a fraction of the cost.

Removable Wall Decals

Wall stickers are your secret weapon. They are affordable, easy to apply, and completely damage-free for rental homes or painted walls. From subtle watercolour stars and woodland animals to bold geometric shapes, you can create the look of custom wallpaper without the price tag or the commitment.

Paint effect on walls

The Power of Paint Effects

Paint is one of the most cost-effective ways to transform a room. Instead of painting all four walls a solid colour, try a creative paint effect to spice things up:

  • The Half-Wall Effect: Paint the bottom half of the wall a deeper shade and keep the top half a bright off-white. This grounds the room, makes the ceilings feel higher, and uses half the amount of paint.
  • The Painted Arch: Use a tester pot to paint a large arch behind the cot or the armchair. It creates an instant focal point and frames the furniture beautifully.

4. Get Creative with Affordable Accessories

Once the main furniture is in place, it’s time to experiment. The secret to a high-end look on a budget is choosing accessories that look premium but cost little.

Framed Gallery Walls

Art prints can be expensive, but you can easily download affordable digital prints online and print them at home or at a local print shop. Pop them into frames from a high-street retailer to create a beautiful, curated gallery wall over the changing area.

Textures Over Themes

Instead of buying a matching, branded bedding set, focus on layering different textures. A soft woven rug, a waffle-knit blanket draped over the nursing chair, and some linen blackout curtains will make the room feel cosy and opulent.
