Instead, construct a heavy-gauge, wall-mounted floating shelf directly above the unit, combined with an open, cantilevered frame. By leaving the area near the skirting boards completely open, you keep the floor visually continuous, which makes small hallways feel instantly larger while still disguising the top metal edge.
2. Choose Cane Webbing or Rattan Panels
Instead of traditional metal grilles or heavy vertical wooden slats, try stretching natural rattan or rattan cane webbing across your front timber frame. Cane webbing is lightweight, hugely popular in modern Scandi and bohemian interiors, and its open weave allows warm air to circulate freely into the room without trapping heat.

2. Lean a Statement Oversized Mirror Above
Radiator covers are naturally long and low, making them the ultimate anchor for a focal point. Position a large, arched or round mirror resting directly on the top ledge, leaning slightly against the wall. The mirror catches incoming natural light, reflects your room’s best angles, and balances the horizontal lines of the cabinet.
3. Style with the “Rule of Three” Height Stack
Style the top shelf using varying heights. Group a tall table lamp on one end, a medium ceramic vase filled with dried eucalyptus in the centre, and a low marble tray for keys or scented candles on the opposite side.
