Very happy returning customer! We have used My Bespoke Room for at least eight designs and, every time, the service has been tremendous - from the designers through to the customer success and shopping teams. They really make the whole experience feel personal. Jelena was incredible. We gave her two very different rooms and design directions, and she absolutely nailed both of them down to the last detail. The packages MBR offer make what feels like a luxury design experience completely affordable and so, so worthwhile.

Using My Bespoke Room was one of the best decisions I made when buying my new flat. I needed help designing my open-plan space and master bedroom, and at the beginning, I honestly had no real idea what I wanted. I was confused, overwhelmed, and second-guessing everything. I had seen Liv mentioned so many times in other reviews, so I asked if she could work on my project, and I am so glad I did. From the first meeting, Liv was amazing. She helped guide me through different design styles and directions, and at one point, everything just clicked, and I realised, “That’s my style.” That was such an important moment for me, because I finally felt like I understood how I wanted my home to look and feel. Her mood boards were incredible. She really pushed me to think differently, but always in a way that made sense, and the ideas she came up with were so right for the space. She clearly has a strong vision and a real talent for understanding what a client wants, even when they are struggling to explain it. I am someone who asks a lot of questions and can be very detailed and sometimes overthink things, but Liv was always patient, helpful and reassuring. I felt in safe hands the whole way through. After that, Sian took over on the shopping side, and she was also fantastic. She helped with ordering, returns and sorting out a few issues with furniture, and she was always kind, patient and helpful. I am genuinely so grateful to both of them. They made a huge difference, and I now live in a space that I absolutely love because of their help. I have already recommended My Bespoke Room to friends and would happily recommend them to anyone else. :)

We cannot thank Laura enough! Laura was amazing at helping us see that she could take the stress away from having to decide about colour schemes, furniture etc and how things could be mapped out in our new downstairs renovation. She took on board our preferences and created a downstairs living space and office that we absolutely love. We would never have been able to create such a calming and amazing space without her input and insight. It totally took the pressure off and was a much more enjoyable experience of creating the rooms according to her brief and mood board. We can't thank her and the team enough! You won't regret hiring their expertise to create spaces that you will love.

Interior Design Inspiration » Inspiration & Trends » 12 Minimalist living room ideas

Minimalist living rooms have become the epitome of chic in the world of modern interior design. They’re all about clean lines, functional spaces, and a serene, clutter-free environment.

But if the word “minimalist” makes you think of bland, sterile rooms that can’t be lived in, think again! We’re all about creating beautiful spaces that are actually practical and feel like home.

So, with a little creativity and some clever tricks, you can create a minimalist living room that’s full of personality and warmth.

Key Takeaways

  • To make a room feel larger and more open, use floating shelves and wall-mounted TVs. Seeing more of the floor and wall space reduces “visual chaos” and makes the layout feel lighter.
  • Instead of scattering small items randomly, group them in “clusters” of odd numbers (like a trio of vases)
  • Minimalism doesn’t have to be cold. Use a variety of textures within the same colour family to add depth and visual interest without cluttering the space.

Minimalist Style Tips

1. Embrace all things texture

Minimalist interior design doesn’t mean monotony. So even if you’re sticking to a strict colour palette, you can still create interest by using a variety of textures which will add depth and interest to your living room.

Think pillows from the same colour family that feature perhaps a waffle, ruffle or patterned texture and how about pairing an interesting rug with a chunky knit throw?

All of these different layers of textures and patterns keep the room visually engaging while staying within a minimalist colour palette.

2. Create décor clusters

When it comes to minimalist living room design we’re all about keeping décor understated and only displaying pieces we truly love. However, dotting around a few pieces can look a little random and out of place, this is where clustering comes into play.

For example, arrange a trio of vases on a side table, or create a mini-gallery of your favourite books and knick-knacks on a floating shelf. These clusters break up the space and draw the eye without overwhelming it.

3. Stick to a tonal colour palette

To create a minimalist living area, you’ll want to get a little strict with your colour palette. Tonal palettes are the way to go here as they incorporate shades from the same colour family which will beautifully harmonise together.

To start designing your minimalist lounge, pick a single shade and then work in lighter and darker variations of the colour. Warm neutrals are a great example of this as shades like beige, taupe, and soft brown work perfectly together to create a minimalist look whilst projecting a warm, inviting feel.

4. Introduce large scale artwork

Whilst our Interior Designers love a fun and eclectic gallery wall, they don’t always fit the vibe of a minimalist living room design.

Instead, you can make just as much of a statement with a large-scale piece of minimalist artwork as it adds colour and interest without cluttering the walls with multiple pieces.

5. Bring plants into your minimalist living room

When you’re sticking to a neutral colour palette, it might seem tricky to spice things up, but that’s where plants can come to the rescue! Adding a splash of greenery to your minimalist living room breathes life into the space, offering pops of colour and interesting textures.

Bringing in other natural elements like wood and stone can add warmth and texture too. A wooden coffee table or a stone vase can make the space feel more inviting and grounded.

6. Turn functional pieces into décor

In minimalist sitting rooms, you have to be a bit more selective with your furniture choices. By picking pieces that are not just functional but also add a touch of intrigue and style to your space, you get a fabulous 2-for-1 deal!

Think of a statement light fixture or a beautifully framed mirror which will bring light to your space but also be a striking feature.

Sculptural and streamlined furniture is perfect for modern, minimalist living rooms as their intriguing shapes provide a statement without the need for extra décor.

7. Get playful with scaling

When going for a minimalist design in your living room, you get to have a bit more fun with the furniture you choose. Normally, we tell clients to match the scale of their furniture to the size of their space, but when you’re embracing the ‘less is more’ vibe, you can go big with your pieces!

Think of a large, oversized sofa as the star of the show, with smaller, more delicate pieces playing the supporting roles. This playful contrast in scale adds a delightful visual intrigue to your room.

8. Float your furniture

Minimalistic living rooms are all about that clutter-free feel, so if you have shelving with chunky legs or a TV placed on a bulky stand, your space can start to feel visually chaotic rather quickly.

Floating shelves and wall-mounted TVs create an airy feel and free up floor space. They’re perfect for displaying curated collections without overwhelming the room. Plus, they make cleaning a breeze!

9. Go built-in

Bespoke storage is the secret weapon for minimal interiors, perfectly optimising your space while keeping everything sleek and chic. Think of it as the tailored suit for your living room, fitting just right and looking oh-so-stylish.

Beyond that, built-in options like cosy window seats or streamlined media units work wonders for keeping your lounge clutter-free. Window seats double as both seating and secret stashes for your extra blankets, while media units hide all those pesky cords and devices. It’s all about combining function with a dash of flair to create a space that’s as tidy as it is inviting.

10. Dot in dark accents

Minimalist black and white living rooms are a well-loved trend and by adding definition with dark tones it’s like giving your living room a dash of elegant eyeliner – just enough to make everything pop without stealing the show.

Think furniture with sleek dark legs or a striking black-framed mirror. These elements ground the space and sprinkle in a touch of sophistication, ensuring your minimalist vibe stays effortlessly cool and far from overwhelming.

FAQs for Minimalist Living Rooms

Q: Does a minimalist room have to be all white?

A: No. While white is popular, My Bespoke Room suggests using tonal palettes like warm neutrals (beige, cream) or even “monochrome” schemes with black accents to add definition (like “eyeliner” for your room).

Q: How do I keep a minimalist room from feeling empty?

A: The key is layering. Use natural materials like wood and stone to add warmth, and introduce houseplants. Greenery provides a splash of colour and life without the “fuss” of traditional decor.

Q:Is minimalist design practical for families?

A:Yes, provided you have clever storage. Built-in options like window seats with hidden compartments or streamlined media units allow you to tuck away everyday items, maintaining the “calm sanctuary” look while remaining functional for daily life.
