Takes the stress out of decorating your home! Working with Liv on the design of our home has been an absolute pleasure from start to finish. Liv designed our entire house remotely, and what impressed me most was her ability to understand exactly what we were trying to achieve. Despite never being in the house in person, she quickly grasped our style, how we wanted the spaces to function, and most importantly, how we wanted our home to feel. She brought ideas and expertise that elevated the design far beyond what we could have achieved ourselves. Communication throughout the project was excellent. Liv was always responsive, organised and clear, making what could have felt like an overwhelming process both enjoyable and straightforward. We always felt informed, involved and supported in the decisions we were making. One of Liv’s greatest strengths is her ability to create a cohesive vision across an entire home. Each room has its own character, but everything works beautifully together and feels connected. The finished result feels thoughtful, balanced and completely in keeping with the way we live as a family. What I particularly appreciated was how collaborative the process felt. Liv was incredibly open to feedback and genuinely listened to our thoughts and ideas. She never made us feel like we had to choose between her vision and our own preferences; instead, she worked with us to refine and evolve the designs until we reached a result that we absolutely loved. The end result is a home that feels both beautiful and completely “us”. We are genuinely delighted with every room and couldn’t be happier with how everything has come together. I would wholeheartedly recommend Liv to anyone looking for a talented, creative and highly professional designer. She has been phenomenal to work with, and we’re incredibly grateful for everything she has done to help turn our house into a home we love!

Very happy returning customer! We have used My Bespoke Room for at least eight designs and, every time, the service has been tremendous - from the designers through to the customer success and shopping teams. They really make the whole experience feel personal. Jelena was incredible. We gave her two very different rooms and design directions, and she absolutely nailed both of them down to the last detail. The packages MBR offer make what feels like a luxury design experience completely affordable and so, so worthwhile.

1. Get the Spacing Right

Before you fall in love with a statement marble top, whip out the tape measure. Great layout design comes down to flow, and your dining area needs enough breathing room to move around comfortably.

  • The Walkway Buffer: Leave at least 90cm to 100cm of space between the edge of your table and the nearest wall or piece of furniture. This gives everyone room to slide their chair out easily and walk past without awkward side-stepping.
  • Elbow Room: Allow 60cm of table width per person for a comfortable dining experience. If your chairs are wide or have bulky armrests, bump that.

Pro Tip: Grab a roll of painter’s tape and mask out the table shape on your floor. Walk around it for a day to see how it feels in real life before committing to buying!

2. Pick the Perfect Shape for Your Space

The shape of your dining table doesn’t just dictate how many guests you can squeeze in; it completely changes the energy and flow of the room.

Rectangular: The Classic All-Rounder

Rectangular tables are the most popular choice for a reason. They fit naturally into long, narrow dining rooms or open-plan spaces, providing plenty of surface area for serving dishes.

  • Best for: Seating 6 or more people and filling longer rooms.
  • Keep in mind: Rectangular tables can feel a bit formal. If your room is tight, look for rounded corners to soften the look and prevent bruised hips!

Round: The Social Transformer

Round tables are absolute magic for encouraging conversation—everyone faces each other, and there’s no awkward “head of the table.” Plus, no sharp corners make them ideal for traffic flow in smaller rooms.

  • Best for: Square rooms, compact dining nooks, and intimate gatherings.
  • Keep in mind: The larger a round table gets, the harder it is to reach food in the middle. If you regularly need to seat more than 6 people, an oval table might be a better fit.

Square: Balance for Cosy Spaces

If your dining space or kitchen corner is a perfect square, a square table can suit best, creating symmetry and balance.

  • Best for: Square rooms seating 4 people.
  • Keep in mind: Like round tables, large square tables make reaching for central serving platters a bit of a stretch.

3. Consider Legs and Pedestals

It’s easy to forget about what’s happening underneath the table, but leg placement indicates how many chairs you can actually tuck in.

  • Four Corner Legs: Great for stability, but they limit seating at the ends.
  • Pedestal Bases: Ideal for round or oval tables! Without corner legs in the way, you get maximum legroom and flexibility to squeeze in an extra guest when needed.
  • Trestle Bases: Supported by upright posts at either end, trestle tables offer great legroom along the sides.

4. Short on Space? Go Extendable

If you love hosting big Sunday roasts but don’t want a massive table taking over your everyday living space, an extendable dining table is your ultimate secret weapon. Look for drop-leaf or internal butterfly mechanisms that smoothly expand when guests arrive and tuck neatly away on Monday morning.
