Lounge design with MariaMaria was so helpful and spent the time to fully understand our brief and bring our ideas to life. She carefully worked through each element in the room and the end design was really lovely. Maria was so responsive throughout the project and we can't wait to see the end product. Book now don't hesitate!Olivia is a joy to work with. This is my second project with Mybespokeroom and I reached out to Olivia to secure her time. All meetings were arranged promptly with all material shared post meetings the same day. Olivia was very considerate of my budget and ensured she gave me options to suit it. This is our second renovation project and it went brilliantly under Olivia guidance. There were some major design decisions that with Olivia's experience and practical insight have increased the amount of useable space we have as a family of 6. Date of experience: 07 June 2025

Nardus was an absolute joy to work…Nardus was an absolute joy to work with. I have used an online interior design company in the past and was just given a final design without much input. Nardus took the time to find out exactly what I did and didn’t like and presented me with so many options and visuals along the way. He thoroughly exceeded my expectations and designed a space that was 100% what I wanted despite not knowing myself where to start! I don’t know how he managed it without even knowing me but I love all of it. Would not hesitate to use them again and really good value for money. Date of experience: 01 June 2025

Bedroom colour ideas

If you’re stumped on what colour scheme to choose for your bedroom, then you’ve come to the right place! Here, we’ll go through the various bedroom paint colours to choose from and we’ll share our expert ideas and inspiration on how to use them to create a beautiful bedroom.

We’ll also give advice on how to choose the right paint colour to suit your style and personality, as well as how to create features through paint. So, let’s get started!

What is the best colour for a bedroom?

Trying to choose the best paint colour for a bedroom? There is no simple and obvious answer to this. The best colour for a bedroom really depends on you and your personal preferences. Don’t worry we’re not going to leave you with this as a cop-out answer!

Some people prefer light and calm paint colours for bedrooms like blue, pink or green to help them relax and get a good night’s sleep, while others might prefer bright, energizing colours like yellow or orange to help them feel energised and motivated in the morning.

Ultimately, it’s up to you to decide which colour best suits your personality and the mood you’d like to create. Consider how the colour makes you feel, and how it will fit in with the other elements of the room, like the furniture and décor. Whatever colour you choose, it’s important to remember that it should be a colour you love, so you can enjoy spending time in your bedroom for years to come!

Current bedroom colour trends

Sage green and grey bedroom

According to our interior designers, the colour trends we are seeing more of for bedrooms will be bold, playful, and eclectic. Darker shades of blues, greens, and purples are predicted to be popular, as well as lighter earthy tones like terracotta and sage.

Accents of bright and pastel paint colours will be used to add a pop of vibrancy to our bedrooms. As well as this, metallics such as gold, silver, bronze, and copper are also expected to be popular to add a luxury touch to the décor.

Layering different shades of the same colour can create a warm and welcoming atmosphere – more on this later! However, in the end, current colour trends for bedrooms look like they’ll be all about creating a unique and comfortable space that reflects your personality.

What are the most calming colours for a bedroom?

White and grey colour scheme

White and grey bedroom

Starting with the most neutral and the most classic colour palette, white and grey bedrooms are the sort that’ll make your shoulders drop an inch as soon as your toes are over the threshold.

Fresh and clean, just like the bedsheets you cocoon yourself in night after night, these are colours to help your mind empty and to find your zen – just what we all need after a run-ragged day.

In colour psychology terms, greys are psychologically neutral making them a very restful colour choice for bedrooms. Grey is also a colour that recedes, making it a great choice if you want to maximise space in your bedroom.

Green colour scheme

Calming green bedroom

You won’t be shocked to find that green is at the top of our list of calm paint colours for bedrooms. In fact, more and more of our clients are seeking green bedroom ideas so they can have an incredibly calming and soothing space to relax and unwind. This is because green is associated with nature and can evoke feelings of comfort and peace. Incorporating green into your bedroom décor can help to create a tranquil atmosphere and bring a sense of balance to the room.

Shades of sage and olive can create a calming ambience, while brighter shades of green can invigorate and energize. Adding touches of texture, such as plants and wood accents, can also help to create a space that is calming and inviting.

Pink colour scheme

Soft and light pink bedroom

Pinks are some of the best calm paint colours for bedrooms because they’re innately warm and nurturing – exactly what you want from the room destined to restore you the most.

Some of our designers describe pink as “the colour of cuddles”, and they’re not wrong! Providing you’re not painting your space in flamboyant neon pink, it’ll feel as though your room’s wrapping its arms around you into an embrace that leaves you feeling safe, secure and totally rested.

A pink bedroom will also coax you into using lots of cosseting textures, such as sheepskin rugs, tasselled blankets and berber-style rugs, all of which create a more relaxing space.

Blue colour scheme

Relaxing blue and pink bedroom

Further proof that bedroom colour schemes don’t have to stay on the pale and neutral side of the spectrum, we are also great advocates of blue bedroom ideas.

Remember that while green is restful, in colour psychology, the colour blue is synonymous with positivity and peace. Think about the term ‘blue sky thinking’ or the calming effect of the deep blue sea. Blue is a feel-good, steadying colour and fits like a glove in the room that should be the most relaxing one under your roof.

Should bedrooms be painted darker or lighter?

Light vs dark bedroom colour scheme

Well, it depends! First, consider how you want the room to feel, if you want to create an airy, relaxed feel, then a lighter bedroom colour can help you achieve this by opening up a space and making it feel larger. However, darker colours can absorb more light and can make your bedroom feel more intimate and cosy.

Take a look at the image above. This bedroom belongs to our brilliant designer Ria who originally wanted a crisp clean and bohemian feeling space but later opted for a more dramatic and cosy feeling bedroom. She achieved this feel by painting this back wall (Nomad by Coat Paints). This bold colour creates an eye-catching focal point and adds dimension to the room.

Popular bedroom paint colours

Grey bedroom ideas

Natural grey bedroom

Adding grey paint to your bedroom can be a great way to create a modern and sophisticated look.

When selecting the grey paint colour, consider the natural light in the room and choose a shade that best brings out the other colours in the room. We cannot stress enough that grey cannot be used only with white or black – it needs more contrast and texture – it needs something bold to contrast with.

Green bedroom ideas

Emerald green and pink bedroom

The colour green is said to be associated with balance and harmony. However what shade of green is best for your bedroom?

Use a lighter shade of sage green on your bedroom walls to keep the room feeling bright and airy. This colour also has a natural, earthy feel that can bring a snug, alluring atmosphere to the bedroom. Sage green paint pairs well with so many other colours, allowing you to create a variety of colour schemes and palettes. Not to mention it’s versatile enough to be used in both traditional and modern bedroom design ideas and décor styles. The hue is also good for small spaces, as it can create the illusion of more space and it helps to reduce stress, which can help you to relax when you are trying to sleep.

Emerald green paint is very much the other end of the spectrum but used with elegant accessories and grand furniture and it can evoke a sense of luxury and sophistication. It can also add a touch of vibrancy and life to a room, making it a great choice for someone looking to create a lively and inviting atmosphere. Also emerald green paint can help to reflect light and make the room appear brighter and it’s such a classic colour that it will never go out of style.

Pink bedroom ideas

Adding pink paint to a bedroom can be a great way to brighten up the space and create a unique look. Depending on the look you’re going for, you can use pink paint on one accent wall to create a subtle, yet eye-catching effect, or on all four walls to create a more vibrant and bold look.

For a more daring look, try incorporating different shades of pink with bold accent colours such as navy, black, or even gold. No matter how you choose to use it, pink paint can be a great way to give any bedroom a fun and vibrant look.

Navy blue bedroom ideas

Using blue paint in bedrooms can be a great way to create a calming atmosphere. You can go for a light, muted tone of blue for a more subtle look, or a bolder shade for a more vibrant atmosphere. Navy blue bedrooms are bold and sophisticated.

You can pair blue with other colours, such as white or beige, to give the room a coastal feel. Or you can use different shades of blue in the same room to create a tonal effect. When using blue paint, be sure to use the highest quality paint you can find, as blue can easily fade or lose its vibrancy over time.

Neutral bedroom ideas

Beige and neutral bedroom colour scheme

Beige-painted bedrooms are warm and attractive – which is why its so popular! It is also a neutral shade that can easily be paired with other colours, making it easy to decorate and accessorize the space. Beige paint also helps reflect light, making the room appear brighter and more open. Finally, beige paint is very easy to clean and maintain, making it an ideal choice for busy households.

Two colour combinations for bedroom walls

Dual toned bedroom walls

Two colour combinations in bedrooms can add visual interest and contrast. Using two colours can also make a small space look bigger, as the contrast between the two colours helps to define the room’s shape and size.

Additionally, two colours can also be used to create a unique look, as you can easily mix and match different shades and tones. Finally, two paint colours side by side can also help to create a sense of energy and movement in the bedroom, as the two colour combinations can be used to draw the eye across the room.

Green and grey bedroom ideas

Emerald green and grey bedroom

Green and grey are great colours to use in a bedroom as they both can create a calm and relaxing atmosphere!

You could start by painting the walls a light shade of grey and then add pops of green through accent pieces like throw pillows or a blanket. You could also choose a darker shade of green for an accent wall, which would create a nice contrast to the grey.

Pink and green bedroom ideas

Pink and green bedroom with gold accents

It’s a great idea to use pink and green paint together to create a vibrant, eye-catching look!

To start, you want to make sure the colours you choose are complementary. For example, a light pink and a deep green work well together. You can then use a variety of techniques to combine the colours.

You can use a simple colour-blocking technique by painting one colour first and then using a brush to lightly blend in the other colour. You can also create a striped effect by using tape to create stripes and then painting each stripe a different colour. Have fun playing around with different colours and techniques to create the perfect look!

Pink and grey bedroom ideas

Dark grey and pink bedroom

When painting with pink and grey, the key is to balance the two colours. For bedrooms with a lot of natural light, you can use a light pink with a medium grey for a subtle contrast.

You could also try using a pink feature wall and a lighter shade of grey for the other walls, or use different shades or grey for the walls and light pink for the ceiling. To add more texture, you could use a grey wallpaper with a subtle pink pattern or a pink wall mural with grey accents. Have fun experimenting and creating the perfect pink and grey bedroom!

Bedroom paint ideas to try

Bedroom wall mural

Pastel bedroom with wall mural

Painting a bedroom wall mural can be a great way to add a unique and personal touch to your space. Bedroom wall murals can also create a sense of tranquillity and peace in the bedroom, and if you decide to paint a large maximalist mural you can give the illusion of a larger space. Murals can also help to reduce noise levels, as the sound waves are absorbed by the paint – who knew?! What’s more, painting a mural can be a great bonding activity for a family, giving everyone the chance to collaborate and produce something beautiful together.

Chalk wash paint

Chalk wash paint has a matte finish that can be easily wiped down and is great for hiding imperfections. It’s perfect for adding some texture to your walls in a more creative and dramatic way. It also dries quickly, is low-VOC, and is super easy to use.

This is a picture of our talented designer Zarah’s bedroom where she has used Rust-oleum chalk wash to create a breathtaking feature wall that ties everything in this room together cohesively.

Paint a three-quarter wall

Emerald green three quarter painted bedroom wall

Painting three-quarters of the wall can be a great way to add visual interest to a room. It can create a modern, eye-catching design while still allowing the other elements of the room to be the focus. This paint technique can also be used to emphasize the height of a room, as the painting will draw the eye up the wall. Additionally, painting three-quarters of the wall can help to break up a long, plain wall, adding visual interest and making the room feel more inviting.

Here is another bedroom in the home of our designer Zarah. She has used this gorgeous emerald green paint in her bedroom to create a phenomenally soothing and creative effect on this wall that otherwise could have remained empty and bland.

If you want to paint a three quarter wall then make sure you check out our video below with Tash Bradley, Head Colour Specialist at Lick to see all the best top tips on how to do this.

Painted headboard

Painting a headboard can help create a distinct and beautiful look that is sure to be the envy of all your friends. Additionally, it can be a great way to save money, as you won’t have to buy an actual headboard! Painting a headboard on the wall also gives you more room for creativity and can be easily customized to fit any style. Furthermore, painting a headboard on the wall is an easy and inexpensive way to give any bedroom a fresh new look.

With everything from sleek furniture, neutral colour schemes and open, airy layouts – modern bedroom designs truly have it all.

Our expert interior designers have compiled their top tips on how to create a swoon-worthy, bedroom that will keep you dreaming of bed all day long!

So, get your chic on and prepare to transform your sleep space into a sanctuary of style, where “I’ll just stay in bed a little longer” becomes less of a morning struggle and more of a lifestyle choice.

Modern and contemporary bedroom colour ideas

Colour is one easy way you can transform your home over a weekend, and it’s an easy fix to bring your bedroom into the modern world.

Neutral shades are all the rage in modern bedroom aesthetics as they create a clean base and are perfect to pair with the rest of your décor. Try sticking to more earthy tones such as off-whites, greige or soft browns as these shades create a warmer feel in your space rather than the traditional bright whites or cold greys.

To introduce fun pops of colour, try soft and pastel shades like sage green, terracotta or subdued yellow. These nature-inspired colours create a cohesive look in your modern bedroom and produce a cosy atmosphere which will allow you to relax in your new space.

Modern wardrobe designs for bedrooms

Modern interior design is all about ingenious storage solutions and finding ways to make your home not just functional but beautiful too.

If your bedroom is looking a little more ‘floordrobe’ than fantastic, then it might be time to give your storage a well deserved update.

To get the most out of your space, consider bespoke wardrobes that give your bedroom the real modern appeal. Floor to ceiling wardrobes elongate your room and perfectly blend into your space to create a minimalistic look.

Elevate the design by selecting panelled wardrobe doors, introducing texture and depth to the ensemble. Transform your storage into a statement piece that not only maximises functionality but also enhances the overall sophistication of your space.

How to create a luxury and modern bedroom layout

Bright white bedroom layout with tufted headboard and open ensuite dressing area

To create that light and airy, modern feel in your bedroom the mantra is embracing simplicity by opting for clean lines and uncluttered spaces.

Multifunctional furniture is a great way to achieve this, by implementing a platform storage bed or a storage ottoman, you allow yourself more space to give everything a home and cut the clutter.

To create a modern flow within your bedroom, try centralising your furniture, so that your bed, side tables and any other storage are all in the centre of the room instead of being backed up in a corner, this develops a harmonious and balanced focal point, as well as allowing more movement in the space.

Making your small bedroom feel more modern

Small bedroom with half-painted dark green wall and white fireplace

To make your small bedroom feel more like a modern master bedroom suite, opt for sleek space-saving furniture with clean lines that maximise your room’s vertical space.

Another great trick to creating a modern style bedroom is to choose streamlined window coverings such as blinds or shutters to save space and make your room feel less cluttered.

The best tip is to embrace the less-is-more philosophy and keep to the minimalist aesthetic. Stick to furniture choices such as floating bedside tables and wall-mounted shelves, both of which don’t cover too much of your walls, making the space feel bigger! Try to stay minimalist with that colour scheme too, sticking to a simple and neutral palette with the incorporation of a few accent shades to add in pops of colour.

1. Sophisticated and elegant soft pink & blue bedroom

Our number one spot may not be a surprise to long-term followers of My Bespoke Room, this Victorian home was the ideal template for beautiful design and gives the wow factor every time.

Blue and pink master bedroom with bespoke storage

From the relaxing colour scheme to the ultimate amount of storage, this bedroom design is truly enchanting and living proof that even though storage is a necessity, it doesn’t have to be an eye sore. Designer Lucy suggested that the wardrobes should be fitted into the fireplace alcoves and painted the same colour as the feature wall behind to help them perfectly blend in.

Just like with every other My Bespoke Room design, the client received plenty of visuals and mood boards to help them pull the design together and visualise the space. And not to toot our own horns, but we think we’ve really hit the nail on the head with how perfect the finish product looks in comparison to the design!

2. Deep green mid-century modern bedroom

The runner-up goes to this sophisticated and traditional bedroom with stunning green walls. Green really is ‘in vogue’ and it’s an ideal colour for bedrooms.

The combination of teak wood, gold hardware, olive green paint and the eclectic gallery wall create a dynamic and visually appealing space while the traditional patterns and styles bring a sense of sophistication and elegance with a touch of contemporary flair.

Overall, this bedroom oozes comfort and class, so it’s no wonder it holds strong in the number 2 spot of our bedroom ideas.

3. Bold blue bedroom with pink and gold accents

Bold blue bedroom with pink and gold accents

Our followers have a special place in the hearts for this bedroom design, and that’s why it’s third on our list of top bedroom designs. The deep dark blue wall creates a cocooning and cosy feel that almost pulls you into the light grey bed.

The paint alone makes a massive impact on the space, however, partnered with the cosy lighting and soft blush furnishings, the room is totally elevated.

Meanwhile, the opulent gold overhead light acts more as a statement piece of art than a ceiling light and the bedside wall lamps add final touches of glamour.

4. Yellow bed with pops of brass and black metal accents

Warm neutral and yellow bedroom

Fourth on our list is this cosy bedroom that feels more like a sanctuary. The room colour has been kept neutral while fun pops of colour have been added through the yellow headboard and pieces of artwork.

Yellow bedroom before and after

This small bedroom demonstrates that you can still have a stunning bedroom even when you’re limited on space. To tackle the issue, we sourced bedside tables that offer plenty of storage and used plug-in lights that are hooked and hung to help avoid clutter on the tops.

5. Modern warm neutral bedroom with pops of burnt red

Natural and neutral bedroom design

Number 5 goes to this neutral bedroom of dreams. The room took inspiration from the fabric hung on either side of the bed and so the tan colour is featured throughout while contrasted by the warm red shades in the chair and other soft furnishings.

The woven rug and wicker ceiling light add a rustic and bohemian feel to the room and also help create more depth and character within the space.

The decision was made to use dark paint on the skirting boards to give the room a crisp contrasting outline, framing the room. This connects with the black in the cactus pattern from the curtain and the black from the bedframe and wall lights, creating a real sense of cohesion.

And can we talk about the storage?! The cleverly planned alcoves placed on the side walls of the bed remove the need for bedside tables and the baskets beneath the bed create extra space while remaining stylish.

6. Luxurious bedroom with bold feature wall

Dark autumnal style bedroom

Now doesn’t number 6 on our list just look like an intimate haven away from the world? The dark feature wall makes the room feel more snug and warm and it’s mirrored by the beautiful bedding.

The utter cosiness in this small bedroom just continues with the low-level, pendant lighting on either side of the bed that draws your eyes down into the space, which is ideal for the bedroom.

Everything in this room from the the warm autumnal shades to the gold bed railings and the dark wood bedside tables screams comfort and elegance.

7. Green and grey bedroom with half-painted wall

Bedroom with green half painted wall

As we said earlier, green is the new neutral for bedrooms and it works perfectly in this room. Even though space is limited in this bedroom, the half-painted wall creates the feeling of higher ceilings and increased space all while contributing to the style of the space.

The monochromatic finishes in the rest of the bedroom create a cohesive and visually appealing look, all while the green finishing touches such as plants and paintings pull the entire room together.

8. Blush pink bedroom with abstract features

The pink accents throughout this bedroom are cute and calming and help tie the room together without it feeling too forced or over-designed. The plush, textured headboard makes the bed feel inviting while tying the room together with abstract paintings and pillows.

If you’re looking for bedroom inspiration and have fireplace alcoves, we recommend optimising this space by either using them for storage and floating shelves or placing wardrobes in the space, or you can also place a desk or dressing table in the fireplace alcoves too!

9. Serene pink and blue guest suite

blush pink bedroom with pops of blue

Image credit: My Bespoke Room. Shop the look here.

This guest bedroom, although simple, is effective and takes number 9 on our list. The loft room boasts custom-built storage solutions and a cleverly concealed ensuite tucked away in the rear!

The room’s colour scheme harmoniously combines the gentle pink walls with a complementing bed throw and a blue headboard that seamlessly melds with the pillows, abstract art, and plant pots.

10. Calming guest bedroom with painted arch headboard

Bedroom with painted headboard and grey and white design

Just creeping in as our final item on the list is the bedroom designed by our Head of Design, Lucy. The goal was to make a beautiful coastal-feeling home in a cost-effective way and she really hit the mark!

Paint is a great way to make a massive impact in the space and the large pale, painted arch above the bed created an impressive focal point without the high price tag.

The large and long curved mirror next to the bed creates a contemporary look that also makes the room feel bigger by bouncing light around the space, giving it further depth and at the same time it gives the feature arch more emphasis.

Our designer Sarah loved working on this project with our client Amy on this stunning yet soothing bedroom.

As is part of our process, Sarah created this decadent design in a 2D visual alongside an interactive shopping list full of all the fantastic products she included. This meant that Amy could shop with ease and confidence, knowing she could make the design a reality in her home. Sarah also included lower priced alternatives for products where possible, so she could offer the client flexibility for her total spend – however, the final design totalled just under £3,500.

Sarah opted to have a lighter grey bed against this deep dark blue (Farrow & Ball Hague Blue) feature wall for a cocooning feel, partnered with the glamorous gold, low-level wall lights creating a serene feel. Just the paint alone makes a massive impact on the space however partnered with the cosy lighting and soft blush soft furnishings elevates the room. Almost like the wall is tugging you closer to the bed!

Meanwhile, the opulent gold overhead light acts more as a statement piece of art than a ceiling light! This Houseof Cage Ceiling Light creates a warm glow in any contemporary space. This bedroom was designed by our Head of Design, Lucy. The goal was to make a beautiful coastal feeling home in a cost-effective way and she really hit the mark! The products in this space only come to just under £2,500.

Lucy, being the super interior designer that she is, used paint to make a massive impact in this space. Lucy suggested a large pale blue arch above the bed to create an impressive focal point without the high price tag. This also makes the room feel taller as it draws the eye up and frames the bed.

The large and long curved mirror next to the bed creates a contemporary look that also makes the room feel bigger by bouncing light around the space, giving it further depth and at the same time it gives the feature arch more emphasis. This has also been achieved by adding plug-in wall lights on either side of the bed. This is a nifty trick as it saves money needed to hire an electrician.

The trick with this space is that everything is simple and understated with small pops of contrast that make it easy on the eye. Plus the carefully placed houseplants are always a welcome addition to give a bedroom some fresh texture and a pop of colour.

Sophisticated and elegant soft pink & blue bedroom

This dreamy bedroom was designed for our brilliant client Ingmar. The designer used her expert knowledge to focus on creating an incredible room within the budget this client specified. This meant only spending big on the essential items that need to last, like this gorgeous Oak Padma Parquet bed frame from John Lewis that we know will stand the test of time! It goes to show that you do not need to sacrifice style for budget as this bedroom cost just £4,500 and it’s one of our faves!

We love how the designer used these soothing complimentary pastel pink and sky blue shades to almost create a late summer evening vibe. The delightful De Nimes 299 paint by Farrow & Ball covers the chimney breast adjoining wardrobes, giving a classic period feature a delicate but modern feel. While the pops of pink and pale blue from the velvet throw pillows make us want to fall into bed immediately!

Tying the two different colour paints together from the wall to the wardrobes is the eye-catching artwork, both taking from colours in the room and sticking with a natural elements theme, it gives the space the sense of cohesion it needs.

Warm modern greige & black bedroom

This bedroom transformation is simply stunning (if we do say so ourselves!) designed by the ingenious designer Zarah. Want to guess how much all the products in this room cost? Everything from the bold bed frame to the decadent curtains cost just £2,500!

We love the dreamy paint effect on the back wall that she created by using Rustoleum chalk wash paint, which is a lot less hassle than putting up wallpaper but the effect is just as brilliant and even a bit more cost-effective.

The contrast against this wall is created by the black metal bed frame which brings the eye to the centre of the space. The bed has been adorned with soft and plush pillows and throws that are a vital aspect of making a bedroom cosy and welcoming.

The soft furnishings have also used muted tones of black and cream to contrast against each other, however this monochrome feel is given texture thanks to fresh houseplants dotted around the room. These give new life to any space and are always encouraged by our designers because they are proven to make you feel more relaxed and reduce anxiety – perfect for bedrooms!

My Bespoke Room designer Celine created a really warm and almost sunny feeling bedroom that makes us feel like we’re on a relaxing holiday basking in the sunshine. Like Zarah and our Head of Design, Lucy, Celine has used her expert knowledge to know where she should splurge and where she should save in this bedroom.

Celine fell in love with the soothing beige patterned curtains from Poodle and Blonde that hide the secret storage solution behind them. The fabric plays beautifully with Coat Paint’s shades Safe Play and Humble, using the neutrals in a more creative way.

Celine also used dark paint on the skirting boards to give the room a crisp contrasting outline, framing the room. This connects with the black in the cactus pattern from the curtain and the black from the bedframe and wall lights, creating a real sense of cohesion.

The space, despite the bright reds and deep orange colours, still has a relaxing natural feel thanks to the light wood, wicker baskets and houseplants that also give the space a lot more texture and cosiness.

Your Bedroom Design Questions Answered

As we mentioned, when designing a bedroom layout you first need to think about what your goals are for the space. You also need to be realistic with yourself about how much space is available. Here are some factors to consider when planning a bedroom layout:

1. Start with the bed - the biggest piece of furniture. Go for the biggest size you can afford in terms of space and also budget.

2. Bedside tables are crucial for somewhere to pop your tea and book while in bed. But how much space do you really need? Have a good clear out and make sure you’re not storing anything there that should be in another room like paperwork. This area should be clean and uncluttered.

3. You might then find that you only need a small bedside table - perhaps even just a shelf will do the trick? A great space saving tip is to mount your bedside lights on the wall. There are many plug in options too so no need to hire an electrician!

4. Would you like a seating area? Unless you're blessed with a cavernous space, once the bed is in there won’t be space leftover for a whole sitting room! Try a couple of comfy armchairs instead and position them so that there’s still plenty of room to walk around. Or perhaps just the one chair and a slim side table next the window would work well for you?

5. Do you plan to apply makeup and get ready in your bedroom? If so, having natural light in front of you is the best lighting for this.

6. Don’t leave lighting as an afterthought! If your sockets are already in place then you’ll need to factor that into the layout of your furniture.

Try to only bring in the furniture you absolutely need in the room. Your bedroom should feel relaxing and not cluttered.

Start with the largest and most expensive items of bedroom furniture first, most obviously - the bed. Next, depending on the space either side of the bed you can think about your bedside tables.

Your wardrobe and other clothes storage should go next as this will take up a large portion of space. Think about fitted bespoke options to make the most of the space available.

You can then get a feel for whether you can add any other pieces of furniture to your bedroom like a desk or seating area. Try not to cram too much in - you don’t want to feel cramped.

Clever storage is key to a successful bedroom design. Take a look at your current system...which areas do you find the hardest to keep tidy? If drawers just aren’t working for you and they just become a dumping ground, then perhaps allow for more hanging space in your new room?

Is there anything that typically gets flung about and doesn’t have a designated place? Make sure to find these items a home in the new design.

Once you have a wish list for your storage solutions start to think about where you could add in fitted storage to your bedroom. Do you have any alcoves that could fit a wardrobe or desk perhaps?

Have a read of our dedicated fitted furniture guide here if you’re considering this approach.

The space under your bed is prime real estate for storage. Choose a bed on legs so that you can fit storage boxes underneath or choose an ottoman with storage if you’d prefer to have it all out of site.

Shelves are your best friend to store bits and bobs and get them off the floor. Make sure to be curated about what you put there though as it will be on display. Opt for opaque boxes to hide items that need to be in easy reach but aren’t pretty enough to display.

As always with colour, our advice is to not follow trends but to choose colours that give you a positive emotional response...if that happens to not be this year's colour then so what!?

Having said that, there’s a lot of psychology behind colour and different hues have been proven to put you in a different mood. For a calming space then neutral paint colours always work well. Add interest to the scheme using different textures and tones of your chosen neutral so that it doesn’t look flat.

If you’d like to go for a bolder colour scheme in your bedroom design then look to muted, softer hues that have warmer undertones like sage or moss green or a dusky pink.

Get creative with paint in your bedroom by painting in a headboard! Have a look at our painting guide specifically for bedrooms to get inspired.

Lighting is crucial to creating the right mood in your bedroom. Make use of different levels of light so that you can adjust depending on whether you’re carrying out a task like putting on makeup, (where you’ll need a crisper, cleaner light) or whether you’re wanting a relaxing warmer light for falling asleep.

For a relaxing mood, colour temperature is key: opt for warm white (<2700K) for your bedroom. This will replicate the soft calming atmosphere, similar to candlelight.

Table lamps are no longer the only option for bedside lighting. Sometimes they might not actually be feasible if you have limited space on your bedside table. There are many wonderful and creative alternatives to try instead, and you don’t even need an electrician!

Have a read of our dedicated lighting guide here for tips and ideas.

Small bedrooms can be wonderful and many actually prefer to have a smaller space that feels much cosier and warmer.

There’s a lot you can do with a small room, it just requires a bit more creativity and thinking.

Storage is key so that you’re not making the small bedroom feel even smaller with clutter!

Scale down the furniture so that the space isn’t swamped by large clumpy pieces. Also opt for furniture with legs and perhaps even glass tops so that the eye can see through them giving the illusion of space.

When painting a small bedroom it can be tempting to paint it all white to make it feel larger, and yes of course this can work well to give the illusion of space. However there are times where it works well to embrace the intimate size of a small room, particularly in a bedroom where you want to feel comfortable and snug. Embrace dark and bold colours to achieve this.

If you can’t go out - go up! Use full height storage as well as shelves to make the most of this unused space for storage.

To make a bedroom feel more modern, start with a clean, neutral base. Earthy tones like off-whites, greige and soft browns create a warm, contemporary backdrop, and you can introduce pops of colour with pastel shades such as sage green, terracotta or subdued yellow.

Embrace simplicity with clean lines and uncluttered surfaces. Bespoke floor-to-ceiling wardrobes elongate the room and blend seamlessly into the space for a minimalist look, while multifunctional furniture like a storage bed or ottoman helps cut the clutter.

Centralise your furniture so the bed and bedside tables form a balanced focal point, then finish the room with statement rugs, monochromatic textured bedding, contemporary accessories and a few houseplants to pull the modern look together.

A spare bedroom should feel welcoming and work hard for the occasional guest. Start with a comfortable bed dressed in good-quality bedding and a mix of pillows; if the room doubles up as a home office or snug, a sofa bed or daybed lets the space flex between uses.

Make sure guests have the essentials: a bedside table with a lamp and a clear surface, some empty wardrobe or drawer space for their things, a mirror, and blackout blinds or curtains for a good night’s sleep.

Finish with a few thoughtful touches like fresh towels, a water carafe, hooks for clothes and a plant or two. Clever storage keeps the room tidy and ready, so it never becomes a dumping ground between visits.
