Real designers. Real projects.
Zero paid placement.
We don't copy specifications from manufacturer websites or compile generic top-10 lists. Every product featured in our awards, buying guides and round-ups is evaluated by our team of professional UK interior designers - against real project specifications, hands-on client feedback and rigorous technical criteria.

Our five core principles
The rules our editorial team works to on every guide, award and round-up we publish.
- 1
Independent editorial control
Brands and retailers cannot pay to be included in our buying guides, and they cannot pay to win an award. Winning products are selected purely on merit.
- 2
Real-home validation
We specify furniture for hundreds of real UK homes every year. Our scores reflect how pieces perform in actual living spaces — navigating tight doorways, enduring pet claws and surviving family life.
- 3
Balanced, unbiased scoring
We give honest assessments. If a luxury sofa looks incredible but lacks everyday comfort, or a budget option sacrifices customisation, our scores say so.
- 4
Transparent commercial disclosure
Some links in our guides are affiliate or trade partner links, meaning we may earn a small commission if you buy through us. It costs you nothing extra and never influences our scoring or selection.
- 5
Regular data audits
Prices, availability, lead times and guarantees are re-checked by our team so our guides stay accurate and useful long after publication.
Our 25-point scoring system
To take subjectivity out of the process, our interior design board rates every candidate across five category-specific criteria, scoring each from 1 to 5 — a maximum possible score of 25.
Best in class. Flawless execution with zero notable drawbacks.
Very strong performance with only minor, acceptable trade-offs.
Meets professional standards and performs well for its price point.
Noticeable limitations in quality, comfort or practicality.
Subpar performance; not recommended for primary living areas.
The evaluation criteria
The five pillars are tailored to the product type — sofas, dining sets and mattresses are each judged on what actually matters for them. Here is how we score sofas.
- 01
Style & design
Silhouette, proportions, fabric texture, visual weight, and how effortlessly the piece elevates a room scheme.
- 02
Comfort & ergonomics
Cushion core construction (feather vs. foam), back support, seat depth, and long-term bounce-back resilience.
- 03
Build quality & engineering
Frame materials such as kiln-dried timber and glued-and-screwed joints, fabric rub counts (e.g. 100,000 Martindale), and guarantee terms.
- 04
Practicality & access
Delivery format (sofa-in-a-box, breakdownable frames), stain-resistance technology such as Aquaclean, and day-to-day maintenance.
- 05
Value & longevity
How well the product balances price against materials, durability and expected lifespan.
First-hand testing, not paper research
Our designers assess products through three distinct channels.
Client project data
Testing real-world fit, space planning and styling in the client homes we design every week.
Showroom inspections
Hands-on sit tests and frame construction checks at trade shows and brand showrooms.
Post-purchase care
Tracking long-term durability, fabric wear and real-life customer feedback over time.
Commercial disclosure
Some links in our guides are affiliate or trade partner links, so we may earn a small commission if you buy through us. This comes at no extra cost to you, and it never influences which products we include or the scores they receive.
