Family Living & Playroom Design: A Stylish, Playful Transformation

This family living room needed to work just as well for grown-up relaxation as it did for everyday play. The design keeps the space feeling stylish and considered, while creating a dedicated area where Lily can play, create and keep her toys within easy reach.
A bold blue corner sofa anchors the main living area, softened with subtle pattern, blush accents, natural textures and layered lighting. Alongside it, washable rugs, adaptable storage and playful decorative details give the children's zone its own identity without making the wider room feel like a playroom.

The brief
- Create a stylish family living room with a dedicated play area for Lily.
- Give the adult and children's areas their own clear zones while keeping the overall design cohesive.
- Introduce practical, accessible toy and craft storage that can evolve as Lily grows.
- Use durable, washable and family-friendly materials without compromising on style.
- Build on the existing blue sofa with complementary colours, textures and artwork.
- Add layered lighting and decorative details to make both zones feel warm and inviting.
The result
The main living area was pulled together around the existing blue corner sofa, with a large rug defining the seating zone and a gallery wall bringing together abstract artwork in blue, blush and neutral tones. Occasional seating, sculptural side tables, plants and warm low-level lighting add personality while maintaining the relaxed, Scandi-inspired feel the client loved.
Lily's play area was designed to feel playful but flexible, using washable rugs, modular storage and a mixture of closed cupboards, drawers and open shelving. A picture ledge, fairy lights and removable decorative decals bring in fun details that suit her current interests, while the adaptable furniture means the space can easily change from toy storage to crafts and older children's activities over time.

Blue, Blush & Neutral Palette
The existing blue sofa sets the tone, with blush, soft neutrals and subtle pattern repeated through artwork, cushions and accessories for a cohesive but relaxed scheme.
Clearly Defined Living Zones
Large rugs help separate the main seating area from Lily's play space, giving each part of the room a clear purpose without physically dividing the space.
Flexible Toy Storage
Modular cupboards, drawers and open shelving provide a mixture of hidden storage and display space, with easy access for Lily and plenty of flexibility as her needs change.
Washable Family-Friendly Finishes
Washable and indoor-outdoor rugs make the play area more forgiving of spills, muddy hands and everyday family life.
Playful Details That Can Evolve
Cotton-ball lights, removable decals, artwork ledges and display shelves add personality without creating a theme that will quickly feel too young.
Scandi-Inspired Furniture
Clean-lined armchairs, natural textures and simple sculptural furniture bring a relaxed Studio McGee-inspired feel to the grown-up side of the room.
