Contemporary Living Room Design: Warm Neutrals & Olive Green Accents
Published
Soft neutral walls, natural light and layered textures create a warm, inviting backdrop for this contemporary family living room. Olive green, red, and orange accents bring vibrancy into the scheme, while subtle black details add definition and keep the overall look feeling balanced and sophisticated.
Designed around everyday family life, the room combines a comfortable chaise sofa and reading corner with a bespoke media wall, hidden storage, and plenty of open floor space for play. Child-friendly furniture and flexible extra seating make the room practical without sacrificing its calm, grown-up feel.
Creating a stylish family space with integrated storage and room to play
The brief
Create a warm, contemporary family living room with a calm neutral base and richer accent colours.
Maintain plenty of open floor space for children to move, play, and comfortably use the room.
Introduce a bespoke media wall with integrated TV, fireplace, and practical storage.
Create a comfortable reading and lounging area for everyday family use.
Include flexible seating and child-friendly furniture without making the room feel like a playroom.
Use layered lighting, artwork and accessories to give the scheme warmth and personality.
The result
The layout was opened up to create a strong sense of flow through the centre of the room, with the chaise sofa and accent chair positioned around a large rug while still leaving plenty of space for family life. A children's table and chairs sit neatly within the bay, alongside compact stools that can be tucked away and brought out whenever extra seating is needed.
Along the main wall, bespoke cabinetry is painted to match the surrounding walls so it blends naturally into the architecture. The unit incorporates the TV, fireplace, open display sections, and closed cupboards for toys and books, giving the room generous storage without visual clutter. Olive green, warm orange and red accents, greenery and layered lighting then add warmth and character throughout.
